The following example creates an array of integers from an array literal, then appends the elements of another collection. Before appending, the array allocates new storage that is large enough store the resulting elements. While each collection type has a unique set of features, the collection types of Swift's standard library also have a few things in common. The values and keys stored by arrays, sets, and dictionaries are strictly typed. In other words, you cannot insert an integer into an array of strings. In computer programming, arrays are numbered lists (or "collections") of items with the same type.

A variable contains one value, and an array can hold many values. Let's get started with the syntax to create an array. There are elements already in the array that I'm attempting to insert, so that's not it. My workaround is to create a new array with the element that I'm attempting to insert, and then append all the elements from the original array. Since we already allocated size, the array doesn't need to re-allocate its internal storage every time it needs to add a new element to the output array.

The issue is related to how the code of the Playground is executed, it is snapshot-ing the array in each call to Array.append.

Even so, we end up with a workaround that is two times faster that our initial implementation. Line four adds the current and the last array elements together. In line 3, the for loop, starting at the first element of the loop, sequentially gets each value for the array. Sometimes you need the index of the array, since the code needs multiple indexes. I am also interested in knowing how to add an array of elements using .append. The splice() method changes the original array and returns an array that contains the deleted elements. Shifts the first value of the array off and returns it, shortening the array by one element and moving everything down. All numerical array keys will be modified to start counting from zero while literal keys won't be affected. These return optional values of the type of the array that contain the first and last values of the array respectively.

Well, what is the first or last value of the emptyArray we made earlier? If the array is empty, this returns a nil, otherwise, it will return an optional containing first or last value.
